A prehistoric village preceeded the Roman city of Lousanna
In 590 bishop Marius (St-Maire) of Aventicum, the old Swiss capital in the age of the Romans, moves to Lausanne. The bishops rule the medieval city.
The dukes of Savoy gain influence and dominate the Lake Geneva region from the 13th century on.
Guillaume Farel and Pierre Viret preach the reformation of the church from 1530 on. When Bern conquers the northern shore of Lake Geneva in 1536, the bishops have to move to Fribourg.
From 1536 to 1798 Vaud and Lausanne are under the rule of Bern.
Vaud and its capital Lausanne play a major rôle in the Swiss Revolution of 1798 and Helvetic Republic.
In 1803 the revolutionary centralist model comes to an end, Switzerland returnes to federal structures. Canton Vaud becomes a member state with full and equal rights in the Swiss Confederation and Lausanne its capital.
When Baron Pierre de Coubertin reintroduces the Olympic Games, Lausanne becomes the seat of the International Olympic Committee.
