Famous Ancient Fountains in Bern, Switzerland

A series of eleven 16th century fountains with colourful figures are landmarks of the medieval downtown of Bern, Switzerland's capital. Photographs of eight of these fountains are presented here.

Of course there are dozens of other fountains. Two of these are shown here as well: the fountain at the bear pit and the modern Meret-Oppenheim fountain. The double helical line of water and vegetation of the latter symbolizes the tension between urbanity and nature. It was designed by Bernese artist Meret Oppenheim (1913 - 1985) and erected in 1983.
